Understanding Work and Income Traffic Light System

pswamy3

The Ministry of Social Development – Te Manatū Whakahiato Ora has introduced a traffic light system to help beneficiaries understand and meet their obligations. This system applies to those receiving Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support, Emergency Benefit, and Emergency Maintenance Allowance.

What is the Traffic Light System?

The traffic light system is designed to ensure beneficiaries are meeting their work-related and social obligations. These obligations include looking for work, taking any suitable job offers, ensuring children's health checks, and attending school. The system's colors—green, orange, and red—indicate how well beneficiaries are meeting these obligations:

  • Green: On track and fulfilling obligations.

  • Orange: Not meeting obligations without a valid reason; immediate action required to avoid moving to red.

  • Red: Failure to meet obligations, resulting in reduced or stopped benefits. Immediate contact with Work and Income is needed to get back on track.

Who Does It Affect?

Beneficiaries receiving Jobseeker Support, Sole Parent Support, Emergency Benefit, or Emergency Maintenance Allowance are subject to the traffic light system. Partners of beneficiaries may also have obligations.

How Does It Work?

Beneficiaries can check their status on MyMSD from October 2024. If moved to orange or red, they will receive a notification and must contact Work and Income to rectify their status.

For more information, beneficiaries can visit the provided websites or contact Work and Income by phone.
